Two men face hefty fine after flight diverts (AP)

VANCOUVER, British Columbia ? BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion suspended two employees on Thursday after their drunken rowdiness forced an Air Canada flight from Toronto to Beijing to be diverted to Vancouver and a court ordered them to pay US$70,699.49 (CA71,757) in restitution.

George Campbell, 24, and Paul Alexander Wilson, 38, pleaded guilty to mischief on Thursday. They were also given suspended sentences and probation for a year.

"Based on the limited information available at this time, RIM has suspended the individuals involved pending further investigation," RIM spokesman Marisa Conway said in a statement.

Another passenger aboard the plane said Campbell and Wilson were fighting with the flight attendants and it took the entire crew to subdue the men, who were eventually handcuffed to seats on the plane on Monday.

After the jet diverted to Vancouver, the other passengers were put up in hotels overnight and the flight resumed the next day, 18 hours behind schedule.

NFL Star Rolando McClain: Happiest Arrest Pic Ever!

NFL star Rolando McClain was charged with four crimes Thursday following a dustup in his hometown, but it's a photo of him being taken into custody that is truly noteworthy.

Visiting his hometown of Decatur, Ala., the Oakland Raiders linebacker got popped after police say he held a gun to another man's head then fired it beside his ear.

Looks like somebody had a good laugh about it at least ...

Happy Arrest!

Police said the victim suffered injuries to his head and face during a fight with another man (who was also arrested) and that he begged McClain not to shoot him.

The former Alabama star obliged and fired it inches from his head instead.

McClain was charged with third-degree assault, menacing, reckless endangerment, and discharging a firearm within city limits ... while in town for his grandpa's funeral.

All things that make a man smile ear-to-ear apparently.

The BlackBerry PlayBook Is Killing RIM (The Atlantic Wire)

It's becoming clear that the BlackBerry Playbook?is significantly hurting an already ailing Research in Motion, after the company announced Friday morning that it will take a $485 million charge as a result of poor tablet sales. The tablet, which launched back in April sold just 500,000 tablets in its first quarter, 250,000 in its next quarter, and then a meager 150,000 this quarter,?reports The Wall Street Journal's Chip Cummins. To give an idea of how measly that is, RIM sold?just one?Playbook for every 23 iPads during its Q2.?

Related: RIM Says Sorry to Customers with Free Apps

Since its debut, the PlayBook has enjoyed poor reviews, initiated by the tablet's lack of native e-mail,?and the sales to match. But as of late, the tablet has gone downhill even further. After six months on the market and just in time for the holiday rush, Research in Motion decided to hack?its device's price to $199. The PlayBook started at a very pricey $499 -- the same as the going rate for Apple's 16GB iPad 2, that came with more apps and e-mail. Not too long after Amazon came out with its discount Kindle Fire, BlackBerry matched the price. Not only is it paying for this price cut with that $485 million charge, but it's not clear that sales are up. After this "limited time promotion" Best Buy was reportedly canceling PlayBook orders and had pulled the tablet from its site, which might be a good sign: BlackBerry Playbooks are actually selling out! But as Electronista points out, usually the electronics store will keep sold out products on the site, with an out of stock message. So perhaps Best Buy doesn't plan on ordering any more, ever.?

The PlayBook is just the latest woe for Research in Motion. It has had a particularly rough year on all fronts. The PlayBook is just the latest device it can't seem to get right. Every single one of its recent phone releases hasn't wowed reviewers. On top of listless offerings, the company managed to alienate its diminishing customer base with a four-day?outage last October, which RIM tried to make up for with?apps instead of money. In the last three months its stock has continued a downward slope, at least in part to poor tablet sales, yet Research in Motion is staying positive. "RIM is committed to the BlackBerry PlayBook and believes the tablet market is still in its infancy," said the company.

Google looks to compete with Amazon Prime, offer speedy delivery service in 2012

You ordered a nifty thing. Now the nifty thing has to make your day by arriving. Then you'll have your nifty thing and a warm and nifty feeling inside. Evidently, Google's following this very line of thinking, as it appears to be in talks with various retailers and shippers to create a service that lets customers receive within 24 to 48 hours. According to sources cited by the Wall Street Journal, the company's effort is motivated by the success of Amazon's Prime service, which allows customers to receive many purchased items within a day or two for an annual fee of $79. Google, in turn, has apparently pitched the project to retailers such as Macy's, Gap and OfficeMax. Under the proposed system, when shoppers place an order on an affiliate's website, Google's system could kick in to offer them an option for same-day or possibly next-day delivery, said a person familiar with the matter. Sources indicated that Google plans to start a pilot test of the service in the San Francisco Bay Area sometime in 2012, which -- by then -- we'll have far more serious issues to deal with than tracking numbers.

China expects 48,000 new HIV cases this year (AP)

BEIJING ? China will have about 780,000 people infected with the AIDS virus by the end of this year, state media reported Wednesday, with most having contracted it through heterosexual sex.

The official Xinhua News Agency said that a report from the Ministry of Health and the United Nations estimates there will be about 48,000 new HIV infections in China this year. Xinhua quoted the report as saying the virus remains "mildly prevalent" in China.

HIV gained a foothold in China largely because of unsanitary blood plasma buying schemes and tainted transfusions in hospitals. Health authorities say heterosexual sex has now overtaken drug abuse as the main channel of transmission.

After ignoring or demonizing people with AIDS for much of the 1980s and 1990s, China's authoritarian government has taken a more compassionate line on the disease and combating its spread in recent years. But people with AIDS still face difficulties in getting treatment and compensation, and authorities remain deeply suspicious of independent activists.

On Wednesday, a handful of relatives of HIV or AIDS patients who contracted the virus through tainted transfusions planned to protest in front of the Ministry of Finance in Beijing but abandoned the plan because of the tight security there.

Organizer Sun Ya said the group was demanding government compensation. Sun's 15-year-old son contracted HIV from a tainted blood transfusion in 2002 at the Peking University Dental Hospital in Beijing.

Sun said he and others have tried to use the legal system to fight for compensation but courts have declined to take their cases, so they have resorted to sporadic protests in the capital.

Amy Winehouse's Dress Sells for $67,000!

This is one dress sure to impress!?

Grammy winner Amy Winehouse passed away on July 23, but her legacy lives on in many ways -- even the clothes she wore!?

PHOTOS: Look back at Amy's life

The dress worn by the late 27-year-old singer on the cover of her hit album Back to Black was auctioned for $67,000 in London on Tuesday, CBS News reports. The white and red printed chiffon dress, designed by Thailand-based designer Disaya, was purchased by the Foundation Museo de la Moda in Chili.

VIDEO: Amy's musical legacy

According to CBS News, the dress' designer donated the proceeds from the sale to the Amy Winehouse Foundation, which was set up by the "Valerie" singer's family to help vulnerable young people. Amy's father Mitch -- who was present at the auction Tuesday -- told CBS News the family was "just over the moon and this is a wonderful start to the foundation."?

The "Rehab" songstress' tragic death was a result of alcohol poisoning, a coroner ruled. She had struggled with substance abuse for many years and despite periods of sobriety, resumed drinking shortly before her death.
