Principal: Workers Feeling Better | Life Insurance Health

U.S. workers say they are more optimistic about their long-term financial future than they were a year ago, but retirees say they are more worried.

Principal Financial Group Inc., Des Moines, Iowa (NYSE:PFG) has published data supporting that conclusion in a summary of results from a survey of 1,150 employees and 549 retirees that was conducted in July and August.

Principal commissioned a similar survey in the summer of 2010.

The percentage of working participants who said they are very concerned about their long-term financial future fell to 68%, from 75% a year earlier, and the percentage who said they are feeling extremely happy about their current financial well being increased to 27%, from 19%.

But the percentage of retirees who said they are very concerned increased to 67%, from 61%, and the percentage who said they are very happy about their current financial well-being fell to 35%, from 36%.

The percentage of workers who said they have started planning for retirement security increased to 29%, from 27% a year earlier.
